Scream - revitalizing the true Slasher Horror genre

Scream brought back to life the slasher film feel from the late 70s early 80s. It starts right off with some really well done slasher film scenes. Wes Craven made us realize what we had been missing from the horror genre. I never saw it in the theater back in 1996 only on VHS. But, recently The Alamo Drafthouse held a Scream movie party and I was able to finally see it on the big screen!! Which lead me to spot more Easter eggs than in the past.

Before we go into that....I love this edit of the movie poster by Mario Frías. He does a lot of movie poster edits and they are incredible.

I love that this film not only gives us a taste of a really good slasher film but also pokes fun at the genre. There are many laughable moments which I think lends to the cult following. Another element that I find interesting is that they break the rules for the scream queens. The Scream Queens, damsels in a slasher film, usually do the stupidest things that end up with them captured or killed. Scream breaks this up some with our damsels fighting back and doing things that make much more sense. Not that they didn't do some bone headed things, maybe like sleeping with a psychopath!

There are so many Easter eggs in this movie and I feel like I find more each time I watch it. One that I remember catching the first time I watched was a scene between Sidney & Billy. They are talking about their edited for TV version of their relationship and a slowed down cover version of Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper is playing. Ironic?

Speaking of Billy...Billy LOOMIS. Ring any bells? Dr. Loomis is from the Halloween movies. Billy also quotes Norman Bates, Bates Motel, "We all go a little mad sometimes".

The whole feel of the movie is iconic slasher film. I think Randy is my favorite character with all of his geeky film knowledge. He is definitely a major suspect because of his obsession with horror films. He has all the 'rules' that must be followed to survive a horror film! And rule #1 saved his life!  I love it when he is watching Halloween alone and yelling at Jamie Lee Curtis's Laurie to watch out he's right behind you & look behind you...when the Scream's Ghost Face is right behind him.

Tatum gives a nod to horror film legends Wes Craven & John Carpenter with her line " Don't go there, Sid. You're starting to sound like some Wes Carpenter flick or something."

Another fun fact is the janitor, Fred, who is dressed in a Freddy Krueger-like sweater & fedora, I only found out recently that the actor was Wes Craven himself, who wrote & directed a Nightmare on Elm St!

Scream queen Linda Blair, of the Exorcist fame, had a cameo as a news reporter.

Casey's father tells her mother to "Drive to the Mackenzie's & call 911" well, Laurie Strode tells the kids, in Halloween, to go to the Mackenzie's so they can be safe. There are numerous horror film references throughout the film.

If you haven't watched the movies in the Scream franchise I recommend you do!
